040Oklahoma City has become a legitimate playoff team in a relatively short period of time. Their stable of young and effective players is extremely impressive, a lineup that should be the envy of nearly every team in the league. Yet one issue with having so many young players is that they’re all still on their rookie contracts, which means management hasn’t yet had to make important decisions about which players are worth investing in for the future. This summer, both Kevin Durant(notes) and Jeff Green(notes) are up for extensions in advance of becoming restricted free agents after the 2010-11 season. Durant is a no-brainer max-contract player, but what should the Thunder do with Green? Darnell Mayberry of The Oklahoman says that’s a question on the team’s mind right now: By holding off on an extension this summer and allowing Green to become a restricted free agent next summer, the Thunder would set into motion two significant elements that could ultimately make the move a smart play. OKC would retain the right to match any offer sheet Green receives from another team next summer. And the Thunder would allow the market to establish Green’s value, rather than potentially overpaying or even low-balling one of its core players. He started all 82 games this year, averaged 15.1 ppg and 6.0 rpg, and even gained an invitation to play for Team USA. Yet struggled for much of the team’s series against the Lakers and has clearly been passed up by Russell Westbrook(notes) in the franchise pecking order. I don’t mean to suggest that Green isn’t a good player or someone worth keeping around. But with so many valuable young players (and don’t forget Serge Ibaka(notes), who looks ready to develop into the post force this team needs to reach the next level) on the Thunder, Sam Presti will have to decide who’s worth paying if the team wants to maintain any degree of financial flexibility in the future. Green might be replaceable in a way that Durant and Westbrook are not. The Thunder will almost certainly offer him a sizable extension—he’s an important part of team chemistry and valuable for his production. But whereas several months ago he seemed indispensable, Green might not now be someone worth giving major bucks in a new extension. Don’t be surprised if he enters next season without a new deal.
